The unimaginable is happening: people stopped searching the web. A decision to open large language models to the broad public has prompted the general populace to accept any answer generated from their unattentatively assembled questions, as the correct answer. Also social media algorithms may have already provided the information a user did not even know they needed, fully devoid of any avenue to verify correctness of said information. The computations are done in data-centers that are straining energy provider infrastructure which pushes consumer prices for electricity up. This demand on infrastructure has increased demand for semiconductors in general, and memory modules in particular, depleting supply and also pushing prices up.

This new framework for 'the Truth' is now expected to be used by more — if not all — people. People are put out of their jobs by the thousands in an expectation artificial intelligence will take over. Education appears to have broken down as work handed in can no longer vouch for the study effort made by the students, perhaps mainly because assignments now also are generated by large language models. Economy, however, dictates that users first and foremost make use of the engine of their company of preference that now mainly expects to get revenue over these interactions. There are only a few of these companies, and since demand is outstripping the supply, prices are going up. Supply fails to grow since energy, hardware and room is unavailable for more datacenters, or may soon become unoffordable.

People in uniform with weapons shooting at each-other in the vicinity of what was one a border-region, is still a thing. Nation-initiatives, both covert and fully in the open, to slowly delete an entire subdivision of the population and its culture, is still a thing. German car-making appears to have a difficult moment, it seems. Television watching has changed. Instead of switching channels, one is supposed to know what to watch and request a download to display immediately. Which has done strange things to the motion picture industry, which already was in disarray by the unsettling adventure of generatively assembled material.

To avoid prices going up, quality has decreased, which has reduced movie theater offerings to super hero movies. International film industry is picking up, though. The real entertainment is currently obtained at the political theatre. We have a year and a half more to go of an orange figure in a top position. Even more detriment to the electoral system may still take place, but approval rating is abismal enough to elicit a benificiary outcome of the next ballot. I am sure the people that are ready to take over are singular in commitment and of one voice.

Talks of organ transplants aside, a current generation of world leaders is expected to move out, as well. We can only hope a new batch will find better sources of motivation than personal gain. Tough times ahead, maybe, but better times are expected beyond that. I envisage a world with international cooperation, respect and nuance from and for everyone, and a new Bretton Woods that restarts a failed economy with a carrier of value that lies much closer to the general public. Why not AI-tokens?

Trump in Peking

Ik had een dagdroom gisteren. Ik zag op het nieuws Trump op bezoek in Peking en ik beelde me in dat ze in gesprek waren, elk met een tolk natuurlijk, maar toch ging het over een idee of een federatie iets zou zijn voor China. Trump stelde voor dat China een federatie van deelstaten zou worden: Tibet, de omgeving rond de Gobi-woestijn, de zuidkust en het noordoosten. Een heleboel dingen worden aangelegenheden van die staten, maar federaal doet wat meestal in een federatie centraal zit: zoals militaire en buitelandse aangelegenheden en een stuk economie. Xi vroeg hem af of dit dan ook inhield dat er democratie moest zijn, maar nee. Het plan zou zijn om elke deelstaat zelfbeslissingsrecht te geven over poltiieke samenstelling. Dat ze volledig de socialistische partij aanhouden, dan is dat zo. Ze delegeren de personen om het federale bestuur te bevolken. En dan zou er een opening zijn voor Taiwan om aan de federatie toe te treden, én democratisch te blijven. En een 'groot China' te hebben zonder bloedvergieten en internationaal conflict. Xi dacht na en liet dan verstaan dat een existentiële omwenteling zoals dat eigenlijk samen zou moeten gaan met een gelijkaardige aan de andere kant van de Stille Oceaan.

Trump dacht even na, en sprak dan van het plan van een herverdeling van de Verenigde Staten: Westkust, het grote gebied tussen Rocky Mountains en de Mississippi, Texas en omstreken en ook bij hun het noordoosten. En ook Puerto Rico zou stemrecht en volledige burgerrechten krijgen, en Canada en Mexico zou een uitnodiging krijgen. Toen hij ook begon over de extra marinebasissen op Groenland, als er nu ook Chinese basissen aan de ooist-kust van Taiwan kunnen komen, zouden ze dan hun plannen in de Zuid-Chinese zee willen laten vallen, schoot ik wakker want dit is wel allemaal veel te gek. Wat heb ik een rare dagdromen als ik Trump op TV zie!

Digg goes dodo (again)

Dang! I though I'd check why/if the new digg does RSS already, and didn't notice this page was up. Internet 2026 is a harsh place, that's for sure. But in my humble opinion it's more than this bot problem. The real currency is mindspace, and a new attempt at a breeding reactor to cull it from people passing by to find out what's hot and happening, no longer gells with the populace. Any avenue of doing so is covered — friends/family (Facebook), current events (Twitter), business (LinkedIn), etc. — monetization there may have made us all numb enough to instantly sign off from new initiatives. Also any system will be gamed for value, and it's like we're all taken hostage by the system being gamed by a bigger system. No wonder 'interesting newcomers' like ground news and straight arrow news kind of get you to go with a paid subscription from the get-go. Which I fully regret, since (getting help with) being sceptical about the news you read shouldn't cost you anything! It really makes you wonder what MetaFilter did differently and how hard Reddit is working to make it all work. But they're still cooking something. I hope they have a close look at the legal frameworks that are getting drafted (not in the U.S.) and what was actually good about the blue checkmarks before rocket boy showed up with a sink.

Delphi 64-bits: set your local variables!

I'm relatively new to programming for the 64-bits platform, and I ran into the same thing twice now, so I feel I need to write about this. This last time, it even first showed up as an exception that occurred with the release build only, not the debug build! But it showed up consistently, so it was something I could investigate. I found out the specific exception only occurred with the 'Optimization' compiler switch enabled. Apparently 'modern' Delphi has the 'Optimization' switch set to off in default 'Debug' configurations, and on in default 'Release" configurations.

'Modern' Delphi apparently also has 'Use debug DCUs' on for both 'Debug' and 'Release', which I very much regret. Most especially because when I introduce newlings to the Delphi debugger, we invariably drop into a core .pas-file, either causing confusion, or the need for an explanation of what that is and why you'd better never make changes there. Or also what's the relation to the program you're building on one side, and the resulting compiled binary code on the other side. Any way breaking away from working with the debugger for the remainder of the lesson.

What I want to warn about is that apparently the 64-bit compiler no longer provides the internal scaffolding to clear the memory of the local variables in procedures and functions. It also doesn't warn that you're using an unintialized value (1). In my case I've seen bugs appear just by switching from 32-bits to 64-bits, so be careful to always have an assignment to local variables before using them. Even if it's integers to zero and booleans to false. (Strings on the other hand, because of them being a pointer-type by nature, are zeroed for you.)

(1) The compiler does warn about you not using a value set to a local variable. And there's also a difference there between 32-bits and 64-bits compiling there. If you have a superfluous assignment to set a default value at the beginning, and the following code also sets a value in all branches of ifs and cases, I've found that the 32-bits compiler warns less about the unused assignment than the 64-bits compiler does. Perhaps because it's silently de-duplicating the assignments it's doing behind the scenes anyway? It's a minor inconvenience, but one I can live with, and one that reminds me to check if all local values get an initial value by my code.

Idee: gereguleerd vijf-partijen-systeem

Hier is een gek idee. Er is nu wat te doen over een eventueel derde partij in een land dat al enkele eeuwen was verzeild in een twee-partijen-systeem. Alleen — denk ik — is een drie-partijen-systeem in gevaar van terug te vervallen in een twee-partijen-systeem, net zoals een vier-partijen-systeem gemakkelijk kan verworden tot een drie-partijen-systeem... Al wat nodig is is een tegenvallend verkiezingsresultaat. Een vijf-partijen-systeem daarentegen! Ik weet niet meer wie het geponeerd heeft, maar met 5 partijen — waarvan 3 brede volks-partijen, en 2 meer extreme partijen om de uiteindes van het politieke spectrum aan te spreken — zou je toch een relatief stabiel ding moeten kunnen krijgen, toch? Zelfs als dat wat wisselt, zou het moeten kunnen standhouden.

En nu net er een land misschien een extremistische partij zou willen verbieden, dacht ik, zou je dat kunnen grondwettelijk verankeren? Beeld je een land in, met een klein hoekje van deze planeet, met wat bevolking en nationale en internationale belangen om te onderhouden, dat gewoon in hun grondwet heeft staan dat er vijf partijen moet zijn. Maar ook heel specifiek dat ze niet extreem mogen zijn in hun standpunten. Het is te zeggen, zijn ze wel dan moeten ze niet weg, maar tellen hun behaalde stemmen niet mee of zo?

En daar wringt het waarschijnlijk. Niet dat ik helemaal niet genoeg ken van gondwettelijke legislatuur, maar vooral dat, als je bijvoorbeeld een wet zou willen ontwerken die moet verhinderen dat iemand zoals Trump geen president zou mogen kunnen worden, dat eender welke wettelijke omschrijving van 'iemand zoals Trump', wel eens onverwacht gaat een vreemd perspectief krijgen en/of vreselijk in de weg komen te zitten. Of ook, helemaal ontoerijkend gaat blijken te zijn? Wie weet. Dus extreme politiek gaan proberen onderdrukken, net vanuit die politiek, is een wel héél delicaat gegeven, natuurlijk. "When a measure turns into law..." weet je wel?

Maar toch, met de juiste omstandigheden, met net genoeg nuchtere mensen aan de wieg van een nieuwe beweging (en geen billionnair die de trappers mogelijk kwijt is) zie je toch wel eens iets moois ontstaan. Als ze maar willen verder kijken dan hun neus lang is.

WWW Working

Ik heb net WWW.Working! gebinget. Mocht je het nog niet weten, het is een reeks met andere personages, maar in een gelijkaardige setting als een andere reeks die 3 seizoenen heeft gelopen, en kreeg blijkbaar gemengde kritieken. Niet alleen omdat het waarom niet duidelijk is, en het mogelijk is dat deze reeks de eerste niet kon overstijgen; bij zoiets kan je niet vermijden dat er wordt vergeleken. Maar misschien is het om dat het een "slice of life" is, of misschien gewoon omdat het weldegelijk heel erg goed gedaan is, vind ik het eigenlijk nog wel helemaal best in orde, naar mijn bescheiden mening.

Ja, het zijn andere personages, je komt in het begin bijna in verleiding om ze één op één te vergelijken. Ik denk zelfs dat ze het rijkeluisdochtertje in het begin een katana doen kopen precies óm je de link te doen leggen, maar ik vind de personages stuk voor stuk net een stukje meer diepgang hebben. De link naar de onderwereld lijkt verdwenen, en nu komt het supernatuurlijke prominent naar voor (Sint-Valentijn als personage! En chocolade als geestverruimend middel...) wat iets meer op je verbeeldingskracht lijkt te steunen, maar de personages zelf maken het wat mij betreft helemaal goed.

De meid met een geweld-probleem, is deze keer niet mannenschuw, en niet per-sé verkeerd opgevoed (hoewel ze haar extreem praktische ingesteldheid in het dagelijks leven van érgens moet hebben), maar heeft gewoon last van een té sterke persoonlijkheid die ze pas leert temperen als ze inziet hoe de wereld onbuigzaam lijkt te zijn. De hoofdrol-speler is deze keer niet gedegenereerd en kan wél genuanceerd omgaan met mensen. De gezagvoerder is wel nog altijd vrolijk incompetent. En de rest heeft ook netjes een verknipt privé leven gekregen om hun werk-situatie te bemoeilijken, hetzij geldzaken of bemoeilijkte gezinssitiaties. Heerlijk. Vooral als je in de situaties ziet dat ze toch net iets complexer ineenzitten dan het op het eerst zou lijken.

A fiction

Decommissioning of a nuclear power plant takes some work. About 40 years, is a typical guess. With the nuclear infrastructure safely removed, what you end up with is a neatly secured compound with a nice connection to the power grid and maybe even an alternator that just needs some turning to keep it generating electricity. The problem with nuclear power is that those are built for quite some bit of pressure you can't readily generate with another method. Or can you? Someone thought of geo-thermal energy and calculated how deep you would need to dig to get enough high-pressure steam to put a post-nuclear alternator to work. Nobody has dug that deep before. But that doesn't mean it can't be done. A special drilling rig was built, with active water cooling to keep it from melting in the deeper layers of the Earth's crust, which could already power machinery even before the drilling was done. So, what after the drilling? Having the piping following it down the hole would already take most of the work, so there was no way to add any controlling mechanism. It wouldn't survive the heat and pressure anyway. So when the active cooling stopped, the drilling rig was supposed to fail and stop. Do you see where this is going? Much later — it turned out — at the target depth there was damage to the drill head, but the material to dig through was less dense anyway, so it was able to dig on. What was damaged was the cooling pipes. It first released some pressure from boiling water, which altered the trajectory to a direction perpendicular to the surface, and fused the inputs shut. The remaining water kept an internal flux to keep it cool enough and keep on digging. The lateral digging fused bits of harder material onto the drill face, which allowed it to penetrate the other layers of rock it passed by. Unnoticed it ended up under the ocean floor, and resurfaced under water. The cooler salt-water finally stopped its extended operation, but the funnel behind it filled up with magma that used the new conduit to release pressure. There was quite some pressure. Enough to build up as high as the water level, and a new island emerged. It took some while before people even noticed. And it took some more time before the magma flow would take the remains of the drill rig with it and spew it out of the volcano on top. Only then someone smart that recognized what it was, figured out what had happened. It did quite a bit more for us than we expected, that Drilly McDrillFace.

Gek ideetje: ilasm.exe

Hier is een gek ideetje: zou ik met ilasm.exe sneller dingen voor dotnet kunnen op basis van mijn eigen taal, dan dat ik me in de dingen rond CodeDom en Roslyn zou moeten inwerken? Stel, ik doe kleine dingetjes in C#, kijk met ildasm.exe hoe die IL er uit ziet en die doe ik na. Alleen, veel optimizing moet ik niet verwachten waarschijnlijk. Behalve /optimize die blijkbaar wat instructies kan verkorten, en eventuele achter-de-feiten optimalisatie van de JIT. Maar misschien zou het genoeg zijn om de bootstrappen? En/of beter de rest te snappen eenmaal ik verder raak met het echte compilerwerk. (Of zou ik toch eerst nog eens LLVM proberen?) Ik was voorzichtig begonnen aan een 'Pascal code gen', maar daar komt meer bij kijken dan ik had kunnen denken. En dan doe ik dat al om uit de weg te blijven van register allocation...
